First eye tests

Some people would definitely think of me as a helicopter parent, but if caring for the health of my children makes me a helicopter parent then I’ll wear that badge proud. From the moment my twins were born, their health and wellbeing has been my top priority. I will sacrifice anything to keep my kids safe, healthy, and happy. It’s funny how I never used to be much of a kid person, but once I became a mum my whole perspective changed. I am always timely with my twins’ doctor appointments, check ups, assessments, and any other health evaluation they need. I believe that, as a parent, it is my duty to prioritise their physical and emotional needs.

When my twins turned six, I realised it was time to take them for their first kids’ eye test. I scheduled an appointment with an optometrist, and we went to the clinic together. This was when I really saw the difference in my kids’ personalities. The optometrist used a series of examinations to check my children’s eye health, eye alignment, and vision. One of my sons was super patient and relaxed during the whole process. My other son, however, went ballistic. He wouldn’t still, he’d scream, he’d kick his feet; oh my gosh I’d never been so embarrassed in my life. We were at the best optometrist available in Bentleigh, yet he somehow found the whole process terrifying.

Following the tests, the optometrist revealed that one of my children required glasses, while the other had perfect eyesight. I was surprised to learn that my child needed glasses, as they had never complained of any difficulty seeing. However, the optometrist explained that some children may not recognize when they’re having trouble seeing, making regular eye tests crucial for early detection.

The optometrist recommended a pair of glasses that would help my child see clearly, and we selected a pair my son loved. It was incredible to see the difference that glasses made in my child’s vision and how excited he was to wear them. Now his brother even wants glasses!
